Beau had been delighted to receive a package from his uncle in Petalburg, who'd said the gift was a thank-you for Beau spending so much time helping him through his health issues. He'd been even more delighted, if possible, to find that the gift was a pokeball.

Now, training at the Jagged Pass, Beau was significantly less delighted at what his uncle had sent him - but it's not like he could return it.

When he'd released the pokemon to start his training for the day, he'd thought there had been some kind of mistake. What popped out of the pokeball was an obelisk with a crude drawing of a pokemon on it. His uncle was one for practical jokes, so it wasn't entirely out of the question. Then the stone carving had split open in several sections and it turned out it was a carving possessed by a super super creepy ghost and what the HELL.

Moving through the pass was easy enough for Beau, he'd been there enough times, but every time he heard something behind him, he turned and jumped involuntarily at the sight of the surprisingly obedient Runerigus following him and waiting for instruction.

"Hey, brah, you, uh, good?" He inquired of the pokemon after one such encounter.

"HSSSSSSSSSRGH," replied the Runerigus.

Beau dove over the next outcrop a little too quickly, eyes wide. "Cool. Coolcoolcool."

Beau blinked as a small pokemon crossed his path, and a wave of nostalgia briefly washed over him. The little Pancham reminded him of Torben when he'd been young, and a smile automatically tugged at his lips. "Hey little brah, what're you doin' alone up here? It's dangerous, don't you know that?"

With a clambering sound like rocks in a tumbler, the Runerigus stretched shadowy tendrils to maneuver herself over the rocky terrain, drawing close to the Pancham.

"HSSSSSRGH?" she inquired curiously.
[break][break]
Beau tensed, every fiber of his being screaming at him to snatch the Pancham up and run it away from this supernatural threat. The Pancham, on the other hand, looked up at the Runerigus's singular eye with a guileless gaze, a high-pitched growl emanating from around the leaf it was chewing on.

The Pancham nudged Runerigus' hand curiously, clambering onto the stone gauntlet with the nerve of a child. Hissing contentedly, Runerigus lifted her arm to deposit the Pancham on top of her head, where the little cub cooed delightedly.
[break][break]
Beau watched in amazement, the anxiety slowly ebbing from him. "Alright, we can take her with us for a little while, but she's gotta stay with her family," he spoke slowly to the Runerigus. Seemingly satisfied, the ghostly pokemon turned and began to clamber further along the path.

Huh, Beau thought in bewilderment, shaking a shiver of fear from his spine, Maybe this thing isn't all bad.

Although his own pokemon had him on edge, he couldn't help but sport a little grin at the sight of the small Pancham riding atop the Runerigus's head as they progressed through the pass. So far, the ghostly thing had only seemed interested in clambering over as many rocks as it possibly could, and Beau had to admit he was huffing and puffing to keep up with the pair.

As they turned the corner, a Mankey launched itself at Runerigus from above, making a swipe at the Pancham perched on its head. The Pancham wailed loudly, and Beau called out in alarm.

The warning was unnecessary, it turned out, as the Runerigus's eye flashed a harrowing violet, and she lashed out with a SHADOW CLAW that knocked the Mankey into the wall from mid-leap, the small primate crumpling to the floor with a high-pitched groan.

Beau came to a stop as he caught up to his pokemon and the Pancham who had hitched a ride, the small bear sniffling a bit as the action subsided. He regarded the Runerigus warily, but offered a slow nod. "Good job. Thanks for lookin' out for the little one."

Struggling to catch up with his Runerigus, which he had to admit was a first in a long time, Beau blinked as a flash of energy bloomed into existence right in front of his face, resolving into an Abra, floating in midair. "Whoa!" he exclaimed, brightening.

The Abra peered at him curiously, rotating in the air until it was hanging upside down. The same burst of energy happened, and the Abra vanished. A 'bzzt' sounded behind him, and he turned to find the thing had reappeared, still in its upside-down position. With Runerigus too far ahead, Beau dug in his pack and withdrew a Premier Ball, throwing it at the Abra, who promptly blinked out of existence, the ball sailing harmlessly through the place it had just occupied.

Grunting, Beau heard another 'bzzt' to his side, and immediately let fly with another ball, this one managing to catch the Abra just as it reappeared, disappearing this time into the ball properly.

Beau whooped as he navigated over the rocks to pick up his prize. "Take that, reflexes!"
